Etymology: < Ras Tafari (Amharic Ras Täfäri ; < ras , title of a high-ranking Ethiopian leader (see ras n.1) + the male name Täfäri, Haile Selassie's birth name (lit. ‘person who is feared’)), the name by which Emperor Haile Selassie of Ethiopia (1892–1975) was known from 1916 until his accession in 1930.In the pronunciation /ˌrastafaˈrai/ sometimes associated with the general importance of the pronoun I in Rastafarian culture (compare I and I pron. at I pron. and n.2 Phrases 6).

Designating, relating to, or characteristic of a religious movement of Jamaican origin, identifying the former Emperor Haile Selassie of Ethiopia as the Messiah, and black people as the chosen people of the Bible, awaiting deliverance from exile or oppression and a return to a divinely promised African homeland.Emperor Haile Selassie is regarded by Rastafarians as the ‘king’ reportedly prophesied by Marcus Garvey, Jamaican pan-African nationalist leader (1887–1940): ‘Look to Africa where a black king shall be crowned, for the day of deliverance is near’ (see, for example, M.G.
