Etymology: < Russian bespopovcy (1839 or earlier as †bezpopovcy), plural of bespopovec < Russian bespopovščina (1793 or earlier as †bezpopovščina ) (collectively) Old Believers who do not have priests, ultimately < bes- , variant (before second elements with initial voiceless consonant) of bez- without + pop priest (see pope n.²).
