Origin: A borrowing from Russian. Etymons: Russian bespopovcy, bespopovec.
Etymology: < Russian bespopovcy (1839 or earlier as †bezpopovcy), plural of bespopovec < Russian bespopovščina (1793 or earlier as †bezpopovščina ) (collectively) Old Believers who do not have priests, ultimately < bes- , variant (before second elements with initial voiceless consonant) of bez- without + pop priest (see pope n.2). Compare French bezpopovtsi (1866 or earlier as †bezpopoftsi).Compare the form Bezpopoftschins after Russian bespopovščina: 1814 R. Pinkerton in tr. Metropolitan Platon Present State Greek Church in Russia App. 293 The grand division which still exists among the Raskolniks, into Popoftschins, or such as admit priests from the national church; and Bezpopoftschins.
