Origin: A borrowing from Spanish. Etymon: Spanish ranchería.
Etymology: < American Spanish ranchería small American Indian village or settlement (a1544) < rancho rancho n. + -ería -ery suffix. With the β. forms compare -ery suffix, and also French rancherie (1797; < American Spanish).
Chiefly in Spanish America and the southwestern U.S.: a group of American Indian huts; a small American Indian village or settlement.
