Etymology: < rasp v.1 + house n.1, after Dutch rasphuis (16th cent.). Compare German Raspelhaus (17th cent.; < Raspel rasp ( < raspeln , a derivative of raspen : see rasp v.1) + Haus house n.1).
Now historical.
Originally and chiefly in the Low Countries: a house of correction in which (chiefly male) prisoners were employed in hard labour, esp. in rasping wood. Cf. spin-house n. a.
