Etymology: Originally (in α. forms) < the plural of rams n. (compare hosen at hose n. 2a). Being construed as a singular, this form hence developed a regular plural form (as e.g. in quot. a1400²), which was itself apprehended as a singular form, hence the β. forms (although in many cases it is unclear whether forms of the type ramsons are apprehended and construed as singular or plural).
