Origin: A borrowing from Afrikaans. Etymon: Afrikaans ramenas.
Etymology: < Afrikaans ramenas < Dutch rammenas , ramenas a black variety of radish (early 18th cent.; earlier as rammelats (1668), also rammelas (1658, denoting the dish made from this root)) < Italian ramolaccio variety of radish (1598 in Florio; compare †ramolaccia radish (1536)) < classical Latin armoracia (also armoracium ) wild radish (see armorace n.).
South African.
Any of several plants introduced to or native to South Africa, esp. the cruciferous weeds charlock, Sinapis arvensis and (in later use) wild radish, Raphanus raphanistrum.
