Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin raptorius , -ous suffix.
Etymology: < scientific Latin raptorius (1803 as a specific name; already in post-classical Latin in sense ‘useful for dragging’ (5th cent.); < classical Latin rapt- , past participial stem of rapere to seize (see rape v.2) + -ōrius -ory suffix2) + -ous suffix, after raptor n. 3.
Chiefly Zoology. Now rare.
