Etymology: < classical Latin ratihabitiōn-, ratihabitiō (2nd cent. a.d. in legal texts; in post-classical Latin also ratihibition-, ratihibitio (from 15th cent. in British sources)) < ratus confirmed (see rate adj.1) + habit- , past participial stem of habēre to have, hold (see habit n.) + -iō -ion suffix1. Compare Middle French ratihabition (a1506 in apparently isolated use). Compare slightly earlier ratihabitation n.
Law (originally and chiefly Scots Law). Now rare.
Approval, sanction, esp. of a criminal or criminal act; an instance of this.
