Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Irish. Partly a borrowing from Scottish Gaelic. Etymons: Irish ráithe; Scottish Gaelic ràithe.
Etymology: < Irish ráithe and its equivalent Scottish Gaelic ràithe season, quarter of a year (Early Irish ráithe ), perhaps cognate with Welsh rhawd (in gaeafrawd , literally ‘winter-season’; compare the second element of Early Irish gaimred winter (Irish geimhreadh )), of uncertain origin; perhaps ultimately < an ablaut variant of the Indo-European base of classical Latin rota wheel (see rota n.) .In the isolated early examples from northern Middle English (see quots. a14001, a14002) probably via Older Scots, although the word is not attested in Scots until slightly later.
Chiefly Scottish.
A quarter of a year, a period of three months; spec. a three-month term at school or university.
