Origin: A borrowing from Spanish. Etymon: Spanish raulí.
Etymology: < South American Spanish raulí (1863 or earlier) < Mapuche ruili (also reuli). Compare French rauli (1855 or earlier).
A deciduous southern beech, Nothofagus alpina (formerly N. procera), occurring in temperate regions of Chile and Argentina; (also) the reddish hardwood timber of this tree.

Wood fissile, but well adapted for staves; it is finer in grain than that of F. obliqua, and much used for furniture.
1908 H. J. Elwes & A. Henry Trees Great Brit. & Ireland III. 555 Nothofagus procera, known as Rauli, is less common than N. obliqua.
1943 S. J. Record & R. W. Hess Timbers New World 168/1 Rauli..has about the same range as Roble, but its timber is much more highly esteemed.
1979 Timbers of World (Timber Res. & Devel. Assoc.) 214 There is also a tendency for rauli to show a pore ring on the tangential face.
1998 Lat. Amer. Res. Rev. 33 13 Raulí forests provided most of the raw material for the Chilean lumber industry from the 1880s to the 1940s.
