Forms: 1900s– rai, 1900s– raï.
Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French raï.
Etymology: < Algerian French raï (1981 or earlier), of uncertain origin; perhaps < the Algerian Arabic expression ha er-ray or (ya ray), literally ‘here is the view’, ‘that's the thinking’ (compare classical Arabic ra'y opinion, view), which is frequently heard in the songs.
A style of Algerian popular music which combines Arabic and Algerian folk elements with contemporary international musical styles, and whose lyrics often feature themes considered taboo in traditional Muslim society, such as drinking or sexual permissiveness.
