Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymons: French raffiné, raffiner.
Etymology: < French raffiné (adjective) refined, cultured, cultivated (1646 as †rafinez (plural) with reference to a person, a1704 with reference to actions), (noun) person refined in manners or judgement (1646), uses as adjective and noun respectively of past participle of raffiner to refine (see refine v.). Compare refined adj.In quot. 1865 translating German raffiniert (1703; after French). O.E.D. Suppl. (1982) gives the non-naturalized pronunciation (rafine) /rafine/.
