Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin quoad sacra.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin quoad sacra (see quot. 1747 at sense A.) < classical Latin quoad (see quoad prep.) + sacra sacred things (see sacra n.).The phrase is apparently not attested in contextual use in this sense in post-classical Latin. The usual Scots pronunciation is /ˈkwoad/ or /kwɔd ˈsakrə/.

With respect to religious or pastoral matters; for ecclesiastical (rather than civil) purposes.Used esp. in Scotland with reference to the creation of a new parish, when the original parish remains the unit for civil and administrative purposes. Frequently opposed to quoad civilia. See parish n. 2.
