Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German Radiosonde.
Etymology: < German Radiosonde (P. Moltchanoff 1931, in Beiträge zur Geophysik 34 36) < Radio- radio- comb. form3 + Sonde probe, instrument for measuring and testing (beginning of the 18th cent., originally in nautical contexts (in sense ‘sounding line’) and in medical contexts (in sense ‘surgical probe’), later extended to various instruments for measuring and testing; < French sonde sonde n.). Compare French radiosonde (1935).
Meteorology.
A small assemblage of meteorological instruments designed to be carried into the atmosphere by balloon or other means, automatically transmitting measurements of conditions at various heights by radio.
