Etymology: Probably partly < a- prefix1 + daunt v., and partly < Anglo-Norman adanter, adaunter, adenter (also endaunter endenter ) to tame, break (an animal), to overcome, to turn upside down (12th cent.; < either a- a- prefix5 or en- en- prefix1 (compare a- prefix1) + daunter daunt v.).
Obsolete.
1. transitive. To reduce (a person, an enemy, etc.) to submission; to prevail over, conquer; (also in extended use) to overcome, subdue.
