Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin quintuplicatus.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin quintuplicatus (1522 or earlier), probably < classical Latin quīntus fifth (see quint n.1) + -uplicatus (in quadruplicātus quadruplicate adj.). Compare Italian quintuplicato (a1712). Compare earlier duplicate adj., triplicate adj., quadruplicate adj., and also sextuplicate adj.

Originally: (Mathematics) designating a proportion between two pairs of quantities in which the ratio of one pair is equal to the ratio of the fifth powers of the other pair, and one between two variable quantities in which one has a constant ratio to the fifth power of the other (now historical). Later: (gen.) fivefold; quintuple; consisting of five identical or similar things.
