Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Or (ii) a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin quīnquennis , -al suffix1; Latin quīnquennālis.
Etymology: Either < classical Latin quīnquennis five years old, lasting for five years, occurring every five years (see quinquenniad n.) + -al suffix1, or < classical Latin quīnquennālis quinquennal adj., with alteration of the suffix after -ial suffix. Compare biennial adj., centennial adj., etc., and also -ennial comb. form.
