Origin: Formed within English, by derivation; modelled on a German lexical item. Etymons: quinoline n., -one suffix.
Etymology: < quinol- (in quinoline n.) + -one suffix, after German Chinolon (H. Decker 1892, in Jrnl. f. prakt. Chem. 153 164).
Chemistry and Pharmacology.
Any of various compounds which are oxidized derivatives of quinoline containing an oxygen atom bonded to the pyridine ring; spec. any of a group of antibiotics containing a 4-oxo-1,4 dihydroquinoline skeleton, which are used chiefly against Gram-negative bacteria.
