Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; perhaps modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: Anglo- comb. form, -phony comb. form.
Etymology: < Anglo- comb. form + -phony comb. form, after Francophonie n. or its etymon French francophonie. Compare earlier Anglophonia n., and also earlier anglophone n., anglophone adj.Quot. 1969 apparently shows an isolated remodelling of French francophonie after anglo- Anglo- comb. form.
The community of English-speaking people or countries. Also: spoken English, esp. considered prevalent or dominant.
