Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin quīngēnārius.
Etymology: < classical Latin quīngēnārius consisting of five hundred men, weighing five hundred pounds < quīngēnī five hundred each ( < quīngentī five hundred (see quingentenary adj.) + -ēnī , suffix forming distributive adjectives: see nonagenarian n.) + -ārius -ary suffix1. Compare earlier quingenarious adj.
