单词 quincentenary
释义

quincentenaryn.adj.

Brit. /ˌkwɪnsɛnˈtiːn(ə)ri/, /ˌkwɪnsɛnˈtɛn(ə)ri/, U.S. /ˌkwɪnˌsɛnˈtɛnəri/
Forms: also occasionally with capital initial.
Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin quīnque , centenary adj. and n.
Etymology: Irregularly < quin- (in classical Latin quīnque five: see quinque- comb. form) + centenary adj. and n. Compare later quingentenary adj., quingentenary n. The clipping of the Latin word may perhaps be after the monosyllabic first elements of bicentenary n., tercentenary n., tricentenary adj. and n., sexcentenary adj., although compare also quatercentenary adj. N.E.D. (1902) also gives the pronunciation (kwinse·ntĭnări) /kwɪnˈsɛntɪnərɪ/.
