Etymology: < post-classical Latin quicunque vult, quicumque vult, the Athanasian Creed (11th cent.; from 9th cent. cited as the opening words of the Athanasian Creed, as a means of identification), literally ‘whoever wishes’ (short for quicumque vult salvus esse whoever wishes to be saved, the opening words of the Athanasian Creed, c400) < classical Latin quīcunque , quīcumque whoever ( < quī who (see who pron.) + cumque , appended to relative pronouns or adverbs, and giving a generalized or indefinite force (compare ever adv. 6) < cum when (see when adv.) + -que : see though adv.) + vult , third person singular of velle to wish (see volition n.).
The Athanasian Creed, so called from its opening words quicumque vult (see the etymology). Also figurative and in allusive use.
