Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French quartelé.
Etymology: < Anglo-Norman and Middle French quartelé, past participle of quarteler to quarter (see quarter v.).It is uncertain whether the following earlier example is to be interpreted as showing the Anglo-Norman or the Middle English word:1369–75 in N. H. Nicolas Hist. Royal Navy (1847) II. 478 [Arms] quartel'.
