Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; perhaps modelled on a Latin lexical item. Etymons: quadri- comb. form, binate adj., ternate adj.
Etymology: < quadri- comb. form + -nate (in binate adj., ternate adj.), perhaps after classical Latin quadrīnī (plural adjective) four at a time, four each, a group of four.
Botany. Obsolete.
Of a compound leaf: having four leaflets growing from a common point; quadrifoliolate.

1826 G. N. Lloyd Bot. Terminol. 101 Quadrinate, when a compound leaf consists of four leaflets, placed in opposite directions, as in Paris quadrifolia.
1861 R. Bentley Man. Bot. i. iii. 170 It [sc. a leaf] is quadrinate or quadrifoliate if there are four leaflets.
1871 L. Colange Zell's Pop. Encycl. I. 177/2 If such a leaf consists of three leaflets, it is ternate..; quadrinate, if there are four.
