Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: cable n., tie n.
Etymology: < cable n. + tie n.
A fastener consisting of a thin, flexible nylon strap with a notched surface, one end of which is threaded through a locking mechanism at the other to form a binding loop. Also spec.: a fastener of this type forming two loops and used to bind a person's wrists or ankles: see zip tie n. 2, zip cuff n.
