Etymology: Partly < Q n. (compare Q n. 11) + switching n., and partly < either Q-switch n. or Q-switch v. + -ing suffix1. Compare Q-switched adj., and also Q-spoiling n.
Physics.
The process of pumping a laser that has a low Q (degree to which it is undamped: see Q n. 11), and so cannot oscillate, and then suddenly increasing the Q so that the stored energy is released in a single pulse of very high power; the use of a Q-switch.
