Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; modelled on a Spanish lexical item. Etymons: plate n., fleet n.1
Etymology: < plate n. (see 5a) + fleet n.1, probably after Spanish flota de la plata, lit. ‘silver fleet’ (this exact phrase is apparently not attested in contemporary sources, but compare the similar phrases la flota llena de plata the fleet full of silver (1605 or earlier), la flota con la plata the fleet with the silver (1606 or earlier), la flota y galeones de la plata the fleet and galleons transporting silver (1621 or earlier), galeones de la plata galleons transporting silver (frequently 1599–1614)).
Now historical.
A fleet carrying bullion; spec. any of the fleets which annually transported silver from the Americas to Spain during the 17th and 18th centuries.The Spanish treasure fleets were first organized in the mid 16th cent. and were discontinued in the late 18th cent.
