† queen's allowance n. Military (historical and rare in later use) an allowance granted to the officers' mess.So called after Queen Victoria (see Victoria n.²), who was the reigning monarch when the allowance became known under this name (cf. the source of quot. 1868). It was apparently first granted in the Regency and also known by other names, e.g. (prince) regent's allowance and mess allowance.
