Origin: Apparently either (i) a borrowing from French. Or (ii) a borrowing from Italian. Etymons: French quarte; Italian quarta.
Etymology: Apparently either < French quarte quart n.4 (although this is first attested slightly later in the relevant sense: 1659; perhaps after Italian quarta in same sense: see below), use as noun of quarte , feminine of quart fourth (see quart n.2), or < Italian quarta (a1533), specific use as noun of quarta , feminine of quarto (see quart n.4). Compare later carte n.2, and also prime n.2 3b, quinte n., tierce n.1 6, seconde n. 2, segoon n.
Fencing.
A parry which closes the inside high line (i.e. the top quarter of the torso opposite the sword arm), deflecting the opponent's blade; a thrust along the inside high line. Frequently with in. Occasionally attributive. Also figurative.
