Etymology: < Anglo-Norman montance, mountance, mountaunce, etc., equivalent, amount, and Old French, Middle French montance value to which something rises (late 12th cent.), number, length of time, duration (13th cent.) < monter to rise (see mount v.) + -ance -ance suffix. Compare later mountenance n.
Obsolete. With of and an expression of quantity.
