Compare quarrel n.3 and quarry n.2Attested earlier as a place name and surname, although it is uncertain whether either of the following reflect the Middle English or the Anglo-Norman word:1166 in H. Kökeritz Place-names Isle of Wight (1940) 44 Quarere.1279 in W. Illingworth Rotuli Hundredorum (1818) II. 706 Henr' de la Quarrere.
