Etymology: < pyro- comb. form + classical Latin tenāx tough (see tenax adj.), perhaps after French Pyrotenax (see note).This kind of cable was first developed in France. The company which produced it in Britain was founded in 1936 (under the name of P. T. Finance Trust Ltd.) and changed its name to Pyrotenax Ltd. in 1937, the year it began production. It is possible that the word was originally coined in French, but its date and chronology in French are difficult to establish.
