Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; modelled on a Latin lexical item. Etymons: pyro- comb. form, -sophy comb. form.
Etymology: < pyro- comb. form + -sophy comb. form, after post-classical Latin pyrosophia (1695 or earlier, denoting chemical or alchemical analysis using fire or heat). Compare French pyrosophie (1842 in the passage translated in quot. 1846). Compare earlier pyrology n.An isolated much earlier instance of English pyrosophist, apparently denoting someone who uses fire or heat for chemical or alchemical analysis, appears in G. Thomson Ορθο-μεθοδος Ἰατρο-χυμικη (1675) xv. 125.
Obsolete. rare.
