Etymology: < Italian quarantore, plural noun (although this is apparently first attested later: 1664 as †quarant'hore; also quarant' ore) < quaranta forty (13th cent.; < classical Latin quadrāgintā forty: see Quadragesima n.) + ore , plural of ora hour n. Compare French quarante heures (1614) and the forty hours at forty adj. e. O.E.D. Suppl. (1982) gives the partly naturalized pronunciation (kwarant ōə·re) /kwarant ˈɔːre/.
