Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin quantum valebant.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin quantum valebant as much as they were worth (apparently not attested in Latin context) < classical Latin quantum which amount (see quantum n.) + valēbant , 3rd plural imperfect indicative of valēre to be worth (see valent adj.). Compare earlier quantum valebat n.
