Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element. Etymons: Greek πυροβόλος , -ic suffix.
Etymology: < Hellenistic Greek πυροβόλος fire-darting (see pyroboly n.) + -ic suffix. In sense 1 perhaps with allusion to parabolic adj. In sense 2 after French pyrobolique (1676 in the passage translated in quot. 1729 at sense 2: see pyrobolical adj.); compare earlier pyrobolist n.
Obsolete. rare.
1. Designating a parabolic reflector, as capable of igniting something by focusing sunlight on it.
