Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element; modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: Latin pyrena , -arium suffix.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin pyrena pyrene n.1 + -arium suffix, after French pyrénaire (1817 (N. A. Desvaux) or earlier). Compare post-classical Latin pyrenarius (1817 in the same source), pyrenarium (see quot. 1832), both rare.
Botany. Obsolete. rare. Apparently only attested in dictionaries or glossaries.
A fruit containing a pyrene or pyrenes; a drupe (see pyrene n.1).
