In form recolta probably after Italian ricolta, †recolta harvest (c1225), action of collecting (13th cent. with reference to money), gathering, assembly (14th or 15th cent.), reassembly of dispersed soldiers (a1363 in sonare a ricolta ), harvest time (a1363), ordered collection of texts, anthology (a1494) use as noun of feminine of past participle of ricogliere to collect, assemble, harvest (13th cent.) < ri- re- prefix + cogliere to collect (see cull v.1).
