Etymology: < classical Latin quantus how much, how great (see quantum n.) + -il suffix, after octile n., quartile n., percentile n., etc.
Statistics.
Each of a set of values of a variate which divide a frequency distribution into a certain number of equal groups, each group containing the same fraction of the total population; each of the groups so produced, as a quartile, decile, percentile, etc.
