Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: quallmire n., quavemire n.
Etymology: < a first element of uncertain identity + mire n.1; compare quagmire n. and discussion at that entry, and compare also earlier quallmire n., quavemire n., and quawmire at quaw n.Later instances of quamire , such as the following, probably show typographical errors for quagmire n.:1927 Havre (Montana) Daily News Promoter (Electronic text) 26 Apr. He saw the craft moving slowly at a low altitude and then go into a nose dive, the nose burrowing itself deep in the quamire. On the β. forms see discussion at Q n., although perhaps compare also English regional (northern) and Scots wham swamp, morass, marshy hollow (see Eng. Dial. Dict. at cited word).
Obsolete (English regional (Yorkshire) in later use).
