Etymology: < New York ( < new adj. + the name of York (see York n.1); named in 1664 in honour of James, Duke of York (1634–85) and King of England, Scotland, and Ireland (1685–8); formerly called New Amsterdam), the name of a city and state in the north-eastern United States.
