Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin pygidium.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin pygidium (K. Illiger 1806, in Magazin für Insektenkunde 5 17) < ancient Greek πυγή rump (see pygo- comb. form) + post-classical Latin -idium -idium comb. form.
Zoology and Palaeontology.
The posterior part of the body in various invertebrates, esp. certain arthropods, when this forms a distinct segment or division; esp. the tail section of a trilobite or the tergum of the last abdominal segment of an insect.
