Etymology: < the genitive of Belus (classical Latin Bēlus : see below) + eye n.1, after classical Latin Bēlī oculus (Pliny: see quot. 1601).Classical Latin Bēlus (Hellenistic Greek Βῆλος ) is the Latinized form of both Akkadian Bēl , lit. ‘Master, Lord’, a title applied to various kings, mythical ancestors, and gods in Mesopotamia (most commonly to Marduk, the chief god of the Babylonians), and its Phoenician cognate bʿl (probably baʿal ) Baal n. Pliny says in Nat. hist. 37.55 (the passage translated in quot. 1601) that the Assyrians dedicated the precious stone to their chief god; no Akkadian parallel of the Latin compound is attested.
Obsolete (archaic or historical in later use).
A precious stone, probably a type of white onyx with a black lustre (see cat's-eye n. 2).

Le Belocchio, ou œil de chat] is white, and hath within it a black apple, the mids wherof a man shall see to glitter like gold: this stone for the singular beautie that it hath, is dedicated to Belus the most sacred god of the Assyrians.
