Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Pycnaspideae.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Pycnaspideae, plural noun ( C. J. Sundevall Methodi naturalis avium disponendarum tentamen (1872) 61) < pycn- pycno- comb. form + ancient Greek ἀσπιδ- , ἀσπίς shield (see aspidistra n.) + scientific Latin -eae (see -eous suffix), the birds being so called on account of the small scales on the back of the tarsus.
Ornithology. Obsolete.
With plural agreement. In Sundevall's classification: a group of suboscine passerine birds having the back of the tarsus covered with small scales. Cf. pycnaspidean adj.
