Origin: A borrowing from Spanish. Etymon: Spanish puya.
Etymology: < Bolivian and Chilean Spanish puya (although this is apparently only recorded later in dictionaries of Spanish: 1925) < Mapuche puüya. Adopted as scientific Latin Puya, genus name, by G. I. Molina ( Saggio della storia naturale del Chili (1782) 160).
Any of numerous, often giant, terrestrial bromeliads constituting the genus Puya, chiefly of dry regions of the Andes, having rosettes of stiff, spiny leaves, and blue or yellow flowers borne singly or in spikes or racemes, and including P. raimondii, the largest known bromeliad. Also (in form Puya): the genus itself.
