Etymology: < Italian punto embroidery (a1533 in this sense), spec. use of punto point (see point n.1), in various spec. compounds, and in fact showing a number of separate borrowings of Italian compounds.
Now chiefly historical.
Used in the names of various kinds of Italian lace and embroidery.

Battaglia Grande dicionario della lingua italiano at that entry, but without exemplification) < punto (see point n.1) + a in + maglia (c1267; either < Old Occitan malha (11th cent.; probably < classical Latin macula : see mail n.3) or < Old French maille (see mail n.3)] (also more fully punto a maglia quadra) a type of lace worked by darning patterns on netting; = lacis n.
