Forms: 1800s– piuri, 1800s– purrée, 1800s– purree, 1900s– peori, 1900s– puree, 1900s– puri. N.E.D. (1909) also records a form purrhee.
Origin: Probably of multiple origins. Probably partly a borrowing from Marathi. Probably partly a borrowing from Bengali. Etymons: Marathi pevḍī; Bengali piuṛi.
Etymology: Probably partly < Marathi pevḍī (with approximate pronunciation /ˈpeori/; compare Panjabi peori ) yellow chalk powder and partly < Bengali piuṛi, both ultimately < Sanskrit pīta yellow + mṛdā earth. Compare German Purree (1844, in the compound Purreesäure : see purreic adj.).
Now rare.
The pigment Indian yellow in an unrefined state.

1844 J. Stenhouse in London, Edinb., & Dublin Philos. Mag. 25 321 (title) Examination of a yellow substance from India called Purree, from which the pigment called Indian Yellow is manufactured.
1875 R. Hunt & F. W. Rudler Ure's Dict. Arts (ed. 7) III. 669 Purree..is said to be formed from the urine of camels, elephants, and buffaloes, after the animals have eaten the fruit of the mangosteen.
1890 Bull. Misc. Information (Royal Gardens, Kew) 49 Piuri is a yellow dye used chiefly in painting walls of houses, doors, and railings.
1908 G. Watt Commerc. Products India 765 One of the curiosities of the industrial uses of the tree [i.e. Mango] is the peori (or Indian yellow) made from the urine of cattle fed on the leaves.
1938 Parnassus 10 26 Genuine Indian yellow is no longer available... Formerly cows were fed on mango leaves, which increases the flow of bile. The yellow urine was collected, dried and sold as Puree from which pigment was made.
1943 Thorpe's Dict. Appl. Chem. (ed. 4) VI. 424/2 The composition of piuri appears to be variable; a fine sample, according to Graebe.., contained euxanthic acid, 51·0; silicic acid and alumina, 1·5; magnesium, 4·2; calcium, 3·4; water and volatile matter, 39·0 %.
