Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German Rentenmark.
Etymology: < German Rentenmark (1923) < Renten- , combining form of Rente income deriving from capital, land, etc. (see rent n.1) + Mark mark n.2, after the name of the Deutsche Rentenbank, a bank founded in 1923 to stabilize the currency; compare also Rentenpapier bond, Rentenmarkt bond market.
Now historical.
In Germany: a monetary unit tied to industrial and agricultural resources rather than to gold, introduced in November 1923 and superseded by the Reichsmark in 1924 (see Reichsmark n.).The Rentenmark was issued in an attempt to address German post-war hyperinflation. It was not valid internationally, but was accepted internally until 1948 (when the Deutschmark was introduced), with the last notes being issued in 1937. The Rentenmark was subdivided into 100 Rentenpfennig.
