Etymology: < classical Latin purpurissum kind of earth dyed with Tyrian purple, used as a pigment or cosmetic (Pliny) < ancient Greek πορϕυρίζον , neuter present participle of πορϕυρίζειν to be purplish < πορϕύρα purple (see purpure n.) + -ίζειν -ize suffix. Compare earlier purpurisse n.
