A decorated container (originally a pottery bowl) filled with sweets or small gifts, which is suspended from a height and broken open as part of a celebration, usually by a blindfolded person with a stick.Originating in Spain and taken to Mexico by 16th-cent. missionaries, the piñata is now also popular at children's parties in the United States, Canada, and parts of South America.
